Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award following his outstanding performance first season with the treble winners.
Rachel Daly, who plays for England and Aston Villa, was chosen by her fellow players as the winner of the women’s prize.
The Professional Footballers’ Association puts on the awards, which recognise the best male and female football players in England in 2023.
Haaland had a great first season with City. He scored 52 goals in all competitions and helped Pep Guardiola’s team win the Premier League, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.
The 23-year-old beat out teammate John Stones and teammate Kevin De Bruyne, as well as Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard and Harry Kane, who used to play for Tottenham but now plays for Bayern Munich.
“It’s an honour to win this prestigious award. To be recognised by your competitors is a great feeling and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me,” Haaland said.
“It was an unforgettable season for the team and for me personally. Winning the treble was something I never imagined, so to achieve that with such a special group of players was an amazing feeling.
“We created some incredible memories last season, but now we want to do the same again this year. We have started the season well and we need to keep going.”
Saka was chosen as the Young Player of the Year for men, and Chelsea’s Lauren James won the award for women.
England’s run to the Women’s World Cup final, which they lost to Spain in earlier this month, was helped a lot by Daly and James.
Last season, Daly, who plays for Villa, scored 22 goals in the Women’s Super League. This is an amazing feat for a player who played left back for the Lionesses in their successful Euros campaign in 2022.
Sam Kerr, Frida Maanum, Guro Reiten, Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw, and Ona Batlle were all in the running, but the 31-year-old won.
