SoccerClub selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Harry Kane tops the scoring charts and Alexis Sanchez, Heung-Min Son and Philippe Coutinho shine.
Formation: 3-4-3
GK: Sergio Romero (Manchester United)
Despite only playing once for Manchester United in double game week 37, the Argentinian number one put in a stellar performance between the sticks against Southampton. Romero not only saved an early penalty, but also pulled off a number of high-class saves to ensure he kept a clean sheet, and all but cemented his spot in Jose Mourinho’s team for the Europa League final.
Right-back: Cesar Azpilicueta (Chelsea)
The Spanish defender was one of the Chelsea layers to play both games in last weeks double game week. He started it off with a solid performance in his sides’ 1-0 victory against West Brom, where a clean sheet and the three points secured his Chelsea side the title. Azpilicueta then found himself on the score sheet in Chelsea’s thrilling 4-3 win over Watford in the second match of the week. Two top-class performances by Chelsea’s number 28.
Centre-back: Toby Alderweireld (Tottenham Hotspurs)
The Belgian international put in two top-class performances for Spurs as they beat Manchester United and Leicester City in their double game week to secure second spot for the season. The big defender was integral to keeping the opposition at bay, ensuring his team walked away with the three points.
Left-back: Kyle Naughton (Swansea City)
Although Swansea had only one game in game week 37, it was of vital importance as the performance and the subsequent three points ensured that they will stay in the Premier League. One of Swansea’s top performers was Kyle Naughton.. Not only did the defender perform valiantly at the back, he also got forward to great effect, getting himself a goal and leading his team to the 2-0 victory.
Right-Midfield: Alexis Sanchez (Arsenal)
For the umpteenth time this season Alexis Sanchez was Arsenal’s main man as he led them to two important victories in their double game week. First Sanchez grabbed a goal and an assist as Arsenal thumped Stoke 4-1, and then the Chilean scored both goals in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Sunderland. Sanchez took his seasons’ tally to 23 goals.
Centre-midfield: Phillipe Coutinho (Liverpool)
The Brazilian, despite only playing a single fixture this week, was undoubtedly one of the weeks’ star performers. With the pressure on in the Champions League race, the midfield maestro put on a masterclass as his two goals and one assist led Liverpool to a comfortable 4-0 win over West Ham.
Centre-midfield: Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)
The German was back to his scintillating best in Arsenals’ two games this week. Ozil managed to get his name on the score sheet in his teams 4-1 demolition of Stoke City. He then provided a vital assist in his sides’ 2-0 win over Sunderland.
Left-midfield: Heung-Min Son (Tottenham Hotspurs)
The South Korean put in a workman-like performance against Manchester United in his side’s first game of the week, but it was in his team’s 6-1 annihilation of Leicester City where he truly shone. Son provided the assist to the opening goal before grabbing two goals for himself.
Striker: Gabriel Jesus (Manchester City)
The young Brazilian has overcome his injury troubles to quickly become one of Manchester City’s leading men. Jesus put in two top-class performances this week. He started it off by scoring a goal in his side’s 2-1 win over Leicester City and he then followed that up with a goal and an assist as he helped his side to a 3-1 win over West Brom.
Striker: Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspurs)
There is no doubt that Harry Kane was game week 37’s stand out player. Kane scored what proved to be the winner against Manchester United in the emotional White Hart Lane farewell. He then put in one of the performances of the season in his second game, as his four goals saw Spurs romp home to an emphatic 6-1 victory over Leicester City. His performance saw him leapfrog Romelu Lukaku at the top of the goal-scoring charts with his tally now at 26 goals, two ahead of the Belgian.
Striker: Olivier Giroud (Arsenal)
The Frenchman has had an indifferent season, plagued by injuries, but seems to be hitting some form at the tail-end of the season. The striker put in an impressive display against Stoke City, scoring two goals as his side walked away comfortable winners. He then provided an assist for one of the two goals in his side’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.
