Lampard questions sacking culture in Premier League

Frank Lampard said on Wednesday that the new owners of Chelsea need to come up with a long-term plan for the club if the Blues are to come back.

During their first year in charge at Stamford Bridge, co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali fired two managers.

Chelsea will finish with the fewest points in the history of the Premier League, and for the first time since 1996, they will be in the bottom half of the table.

Even though Roman Abramovich liked to hire and fire people, Lampard was a big part of a very successful time for the club.

But the interim Chelsea manager thinks the club needs more stability since Mauricio Pochettino is likely to be named the new manager for next season.

This season, 11 Premier League teams have fired their managers. Chelsea, Southampton, and Leeds are the only three teams to have fired two managers.

“You wonder how successful always it is to change those things,” said Lampard ahead of Thursday’s trip to Manchester United.

“It’s clear it’s become that kind of a job and a situation and there are many teams that are fighting with expectations that might not be exactly stable.

“We’re in a very reactionary world anyway. In years gone by the reaction to one, two, three defeats might have been different.

“Now we have this explosion very quickly and you just have to understand it when you’re doing this job.”

Since Lampard came back to Chelsea in April, they have lost seven of the nine games he has been in charge of. They are now 12th in the table.
