Jordan Pickford’s incredible error handed Divock Origi a scarcely believable Merseyside derby winner as Liverpool claimed a dramatic 1-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
Everton came into the game looking to end their infamous Anfield hoodoo and they had numerous first-half chances to take the lead, but failed to beat Alisson in the Liverpool goal.
Jurgen Klopp’s men had several chances of their own, but also could not take advantage in what was proving to be a tight affair at Anfield.
0-0 at the break with both teams looking to push for the three points.
Divok Origi was brought on as a substitute and had a golden chance to open the scoring, but the Belgian striker somehow managed to strike the bar from inside the six-yard box.
Time then looked to be drifting away with the game still goalless, but then disaster struck for Pickford, allowing Origi to make amends for his earlier miss.
Virgil van Dijk skewed a long-range effort which appeared to be heading for the top of the crossbar, only for Pickford to inexplicably palm it back into the air, the ball then bouncing off the bar and into the path of Origi, who had the simple task of nodding into an empty net.
It means Liverpool – whose manager Jurgen Klopp sprinted on to the pitch to celebrate – stay within touching distance of champions Manchester City, who they trail by just two points, with the Reds continuing to look like the most likely challengers to Pep Guardiola’s side.
