SASoccermag selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Christian Benteke and Wilfried Zaha stun Chelsea, while Jamie Vardy shines again.
Formation: 4-4-2
Goalkeeper: Victor Valdes (Middlesbrough)
In what has been a difficult season for Middlesbrough, goalkeeper Victor Valdes has been a standout performer. The Spanish stopper was yet again on top of his game this weekend as he pulled off a number of quality saves to ensure that his team earned a hard-fought point in their 0-0 draw against Swansea. The point could prove to be vital in Boro’s fight for survival.
Right back: Danny Simpson (Leicester City)
The Englishman, as with many of his teammates, has seen a massive turnaround in form since the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. Simpson continued his good form this weekend as he helped his side to a 2-0 home win over Stoke City. The Englishman worked tirelessly up and down Leicester’s right flank and got forward to great effect as he supplied the assists for both Onyinye Ndidi’s opener and Jamie Vardy’s second goal.
Centre back: Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal)
Arsenal went into Sunday’s clash against Manchester City desperate for a good performance after a run of poor form. German defender Mustafi stood up and put in a quality display to earn his side a point with a 2-2 draw. The defender provided the assist for Theo Walcott’s equaliser before he scored his side’s second equaliser with a towering header from a corner. Mustafi also performed valiantly in defence as he helped keep City’s attacking threat at bay.
Centre back: Miguel Britos (Watford)
Uruguayan defender Britos was a standout performer for Watford in their 1-0 win over Sunderland this past weekend. The defender was not only solid in defence, as his side kept a clean sheet, but also got forward to great effect by scoring the only goal of the game as he nodded home from close range after a goalmouth centre.
Left back: Andrew Robertson (Hull City)
Scottish international Andrew Robertson helped his side to a vital three points with a 2-1 win over West Ham. The left back not only played a pivotal role in defence, but also managed to get himself a goal as he coolly slotted past West Ham goalkeeper Darren Randolf to grab Hull’s equaliser. The goal proved to be the turning point, catapulting Hull to victory, keeping their survival hopes alive.
Right midfield: Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)
The former Manchester United man put in a top-drawer performance to help his side pick up a surprising victory over table toppers Chelsea. Zaha was a constant threat, scoring Palace’s equalising goal before setting up Christian Benteke for what proved to be the winner. Zaha will be hoping to keep his good form going to help fire Palace to safety.
Centre midfield: Phillipe Coutinho (Liverpool)
The Brazilian maestro was the standout performer in the Merseyside derby against Everton. The midfielder scored Liverpool’s second goal of the match, giving them the lead, and he provided the assist for Divock Origi’s goal, which wrapped up the three points for his side.
Centre midfield: Onyinye Ndidi (Leicester City)
Nigerian International Ndidi seems to have finally found his feet, following his move to Leicester in January. Ndidi gave his side the best possible start, as his unstoppable strike from distance gave his side the lead at 25 minutes. The former Genk player put in a tireless performance from the middle of the park and guided his side to a 2-0 victory.
Left Midfield: Sadio Mane (Liverpool)
Mane has been an integral part of Liverpool’s attacking threat this season and he was at it again this weekend in the Merseyside derby. The Senegalese international ensured his side got off to a perfect start as he opened the scoring inside the opening 10 minutes. Although he had to be taken off with an injury in the second half, Mane played a vital role in helping his side to a 3-1 victory.
Striker: Christian Benteke (Crystal Palace)
Belgium striker Benteke has had an indifferent season following his move from Liverpool. This week, however, the forward put in a quality display and helped fire his team to an impressive win over Chelsea. He not only provided the assist for Zaha’s opener, but also got the all-important winner, as he cheekily chipped Chelsea’s goalkeeper. Benteke’s goal was vital in ensuring Palace picked up their fourth consecutive victory, taking them further away from the relegation zone.
Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)
A man reborn. For the second time in two weeks, Jamie Vardy makes the team of the week. The Englishman yet again was a star performer for Leicester as he got his name on the scoresheet, scoring the second goal of the game, which ensured his side picked up the three points and continue their revival under Craig Shakespeare.
