Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League standings with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday evening.

Curtis Jones’ winner and Mohamed Salah’s penalty made it 10 wins in 11 games since Slot took over for Jurgen Klopp.

Chelsea, who had over 60 percent of the ball, lost to Manchester City on the first weekend of the season, but Nicolas Jackson pulled them even for a short while.

Liverpool’s victory puts them four points ahead of Arsenal, who they will play at the Emirates next weekend, and one point ahead of City.

Chelsea is still in sixth place, seven points behind the leaders, but the Blues had plenty to be hopeful about after a performance that pushed Liverpool to their limits.

After the international break in September, Liverpool’s lone loss under Slot came at Nottingham Forest.

After their recent efforts over the Atlantic, the Dutchman replied by benching all three of his South American internationals, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, and Alexis Mac Allister.

The England international won Liverpool’s penalty and scored the game-winning goal, proving that it was a wise move to give Jones just his second league start of the year.

In the first half hour, Chelsea dominated the ball and got into a good rhythm, pushing the home team back.

However, Chelsea was caught off guard when Salah feed Jones, who was taken down by Levi Colwill, as Liverpool’s speed on the break remained a continual threat.

With the ensuing penalty, Salah scored his tenth goal against his old team.

Cody Gakpo scored shortly after after a brilliant Liverpool counterattack, but Salah had gone offside before providing the assist.

The first indication that Chelsea had some punch to their possession football came when Jackson hammered off the angle of post and bar at the other end.

However, just before halftime, Chelsea had another escape when Jones was taken down by Robert Sanchez’s challenge, and referee John Brooks first pointed to the spot again.

However, VAR stepped in when the Spanish goalie touched the ball before colliding with Jones.

The Blues tied the score three minutes after the second half begun thanks to another assist from VAR for the visitors.

For his fifth goal in eight Premier League appearances, Jackson coolly tapped past Caoimhin Kelleher after latching onto Moises Caicedo’s through pass.

Ibrahima Konate was revealed to have played on after the Senegalese attacker was offside on the pitch.

Jones’ run was perfectly timed to control and flick in Salah’s cross, and Liverpool regained the lead again in just three minutes.

Up until seven minutes of stoppage time, Chelsea struggled to generate clear-cut opportunities for the equaliser, forcing Slot’s team to defend their lead for the last forty minutes.

Before Christopher Nkunku could get a decisive touch on Pedro Neto’s tease cross, Renato Vega headed over Cole Palmer’s free-kick.
