SoccerClub selects the Premier League Team of the Week as Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy were on the mark, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
GK: Tom Heaton (Burnley)
The Burnley stopper has undoubtedly been one of their star men throughout the season, winning his team a number of vital points with his heroics between the sticks. This weekend was no different as the Englishman was in top form to ensure his side kept a clean sheet and earn a hard-fought point in a 0-0 draw with Sunderland.
Right back: Antonio Valencia (Manchester United)
The Ecuadorian has been a consistent performer for Manchester United this season, prompting Jose Mourinho to call him ‘the best right back in the world’. Valencia continued his fine form this weekend as his team beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at the Riverside Stadium. Valencia was an ever-present threat down United’s right-hand side as he worked tirelessly in defence and attack. The right back was rewarded with a goal late on when he chased down a back pass to Boro keeper Victor Valdes who slipped, leaving the defender with the easiest of tap-ins to seal the game.
Centre back: Craig Dawson (West Brom)
West Brom, as with any team managed by Tony Pulis, are always a threat from set plays. The team is built on this threat, as well as a defensive bedrock, of which Craig Dawson forms an integral part. Dawson showed why his manager has so much faith in his abilities, as the defender rose highest at a corner, not once but twice, to to lead his team to an impressive 3-1 victory over Arsenal. His set piece prowess was matched by his defensive qualities as they limited the Arsenal attacking threat, not allowing them back into the game.
Centre back: Mamadou Sakho (Crystal Palace)
Since his move from Liverpool, the French defender has played a vital role in turning around Crystal Palace’s fortunes under Sam Allardyce. Sakho put in yet another quality display to help his team to a clean sheet, and a vital 1-0 win over Watford, their third win in a row, which has seen them edge away from the relegation zone.
Left back: Leighton Baines (Everton)
The left back has been a stalwart for Everton over a number of years, and he showed he still has it in him this past weekend. The Englishman was solid in defence as he dealt with any threat down the left hand side, while also proving a threat going forward, supplying a number of dangerous crosses into the box. Baines helped his team to another clean sheet and the 4-0 victory as Everton continued their fine form.
Right Midfield: Jesse Lingard (Manchester United)
The young Englishman has found himself being used as a squad player by Jose Mourinho this season. However, Lingard put in a Man of the Match performance this weekend which he might be hoping could change his role at United. Lingard was full of energy and drive at the heart of United’s attacking threat and he got his reward when the Boro defenders stood off him, allowing him to shoot, and he made no mistake as he rocketed his shot into the top corner to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Centre midfield: James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Fresh off an England call up, Ward-Prowse was brimming with confidence as his team went into their game against Spurs this weekend. Although Southampton were largely outplayed in the first half, seeing them trail 2-0 at the break, they did come out fighting in the second half. It was the young star who prompted the fight-back when he pulled a goal back with a calm finish at 52 minutes. Although Ward-Prowse and his teammates looked to push on for an equaliser, it was not to be as the Saints lost 2-1.
Centre midfield: Dele Alli (Tottenham Hotspur)
In the absence of Harry Kane, Tottenham star Dele Alli was expected to stand up, and he did just that as he put in a stand-out performance to lead his team to a 2-1 victory over Southampton. Alli looked a threat every time he went forward as his team dominated the half after Christian Eriksen put them 1-0 up early on. Then on 33 minutes Alli won a penalty and stepped up to convert it to give his side a cushion at 2-0. However, Southampton did pull a goal back, which forced the Englishman to put in a defensive shift to perfection in order to help his team to three important points.
Left midfield: Willian (Chelsea)
Willian has found a starting spot hard to come by in recent weeks as Pedro and Eden Hazard have been Antonio Conte’s preferred choices. This weekend however, Hazard was out with an injury, providing Willian with a chance. The Brazilian took full advantage of his opportunity as he opened the scoring early on when his free kick caught Stoke keeper Lee Grant napping at the front post. Willian’s pace and skill proved a constant threat for Stoke. Although Stoke found an equaliser, a late Gary Cahill goal ensured that Chelsea walked away with the three points.
Striker: Romelu Lukaku (Everton)
The Belgium hitman continues to shine for Everton. Despite the media attention surrounding his future, the striker was again the star performer for Everton. Lukaku provided an assist for Everton’s second goal of their game against Hull before scoring the third and fourth goal himself, sending him further ahead at the top of the scoring charts.
Striker: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City)
The star from last year’s title-winning season, Vardy, finally seems to be regaining his form under new boss Craig Shakespeare. The England international was the main man as the Foxes beat West Ham 3-2 to help ease their relegation worries. Vardy provided the assist for Riyad Mahrez’s opener and then, after Robert Huth’s goal, the striker grabbed a goal of his own to make it 3-1. Although West Ham pulled another goal back, Leicester managed to hold on for an important victory.
