Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho praised his side’s fighting spirit which saw them clinch a 2-0 victory over Premier League leader Chelsea at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera both scored the deciding goals in the match which saw United move up to fifth in the Premier League standing with 60 points following their impressive team performance.
The Portuguese believe his side deserved the victory following their dominant performance, while also reserving special praise for Eric Bailly and Marcus Rojo after they stood tall in the United defence.
‘I think everyone did what they had to do. Everybody fought really hard. Bailly and Rojo, I think they deserve a special mention because they have played in absolutely every game, non-stop, since the injuries of Smalling and Jones,; Mourinho told the Manchester United website.
‘But I am really happy with the team and the results because the Manchester City and Liverpool results left us in the position of needing to win.
‘Not even a draw would be a good result for us, so I am really happy for the boys and for us because we keep two windows open to try to play Champions League football.’
Mourinho insists that the Red Devils will continue to fight for a place in next season’s Champions League on two fronts, finishing in the top four of the Premier League or winning the Europa League trophy.
‘I cannot yet give up the Premier League. We have to try and if one day we are in the Europa League and in the Premier League the distance is too big, then we have to prioritise and nobody can criticise us if in the last matches of the league we do it in a different way,’ he added.
‘But while it is mathematically possible, we have to go with everything we have.’
Manchester United will be hoping to continue their winning ways when they take on Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday, 23 April.
The match at Turf Moor kicks off at 15:15.
