Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has revealed that there is “no truth” in a report claiming that Cristiano Ronaldo has a clause in his contract with Al Nassr that would allow him to join the Magpies if they qualify for the Champions League.
Ronaldo was unveiled by Al Nassr on Tuesday. The Portugal star has signed a deal with the Saudi Arabian team worth an estimated €200 million ($211 million) that keeps him there until June 2025.
In November, the 37-year-old striker left Manchester United on good terms after giving an explosive TV interview in which he criticized Old Trafford manager Erik ten Hag and the club’s leadership.
At his first press conference after joining Al Nassr, Ronaldo said, “My work is done in Europe.”
But a report from Spain this week said that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was already thinking about a possible return to the Premier League.
The report said that Ronaldo had put a clause in his deal with Al Nassr that would let him go on loan to Newcastle, which is 80 percent owned by the Saudi Public Investment Fund. If Newcastle makes it to the Champions League next season, Ronaldo would be able to play for Newcastle on loan.
Howe tried to stop talk of a move for the former Real Madrid and Juventus star before Tuesday’s Premier League game between third-placed Newcastle and first-placed Arsenal.
“We wish Cristiano all the best in his venture but from our point of view there’s no truth in that,” Howe told Sky Sports.
