Chelsea manager Graham Potter acknowledged he cannot rely on the support of the club’s board for much longer following their 2-0 defeat to rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Spurs are now in the top four of the Premier League, thanks to goals from Oliver Skipp and Harry Kane. They have a four-point lead over fifth-placed Newcastle, but the Magpies have two games in hand.
Chelsea stays in 10th place, and it looks like the only way they can play in the Champions League next season is if they win the European Cup for a third time, which is a long shot.
Even though Potter’s team has spent more than £500 million ($600 million) on new players this season, they have only won two of their 15 games so far.
“I know the responsibility,” said Potter. “(The results) are not good enough for this club. I’m not happy with them. I take full responsibility for those results.”
So far, Chelsea’s new owners have not changed their minds about supporting Potter.
But people must be getting tired of waiting, because Blues chairman and co-owner Todd Boehly was at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to see his team play another dull game.
“If results aren’t good enough, which they aren’t at the moment, you can’t rely on support forever,” added Potter.
“My job is to keep going, to try and change the moment. The players are hurting. It’s a tough moment for us.”
Chelsea has only scored one goal in their last six games. When they fell behind just seconds into the second half, they didn’t show much fight for their boss, who is having a hard time.
In a tense first period, neither team got going, and the visitors were lucky to finish with only 11 players.
Referee Stuart Attwell talked to his assistant and then gave Hakim Ziyech a straight red card for pushing Emerson Royal in the face.
But Attwell changed his mind after seeing what happened on the monitor at the field.
Chelsea didn’t take advantage of this break, and just 19 seconds after the break, they were behind.
Emerson’s first shot was saved by Kepa Arrizabalaga, but the Spanish goalkeeper should not have let Skipp’s shot go in off the underside of the bar for his first goal for Spurs.
Tottenham was again without their manager Antonio Conte, who is still recovering from emergency surgery to remove his gallbladder. However, when his assistant Cristian Stellini has been in charge, Spurs have won every game.
“Our desire was this, to win, play a great game and to fight for every ball,” said Stellini, who added he expects Conte to return to London this week.
“We are happy for the fans, the club and of course for us and Antonio who is still at home.”
