Mohamed Salah says his side has “no excuse” for Liverpool’s failure to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in seven seasons.
With their 4-1 win over Chelsea, United joined Manchester City, Arsenal, and Newcastle in qualifying for Europe’s top club competition next season.
After coming close to a never-before-seen quadruple last season, Liverpool’s play dropped off a cliff this year.
Even though the team went 10 games without losing, it was too little, too late. They will only finish fifth and play in the Europa League next season.
“I”m totally devastated,” Salah, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season, posted on his social media channels.
“There’s absolutely no excuse for this. We had everything we needed to make it to next year’s Champions League and we failed.
“We are Liverpool and qualifying to the competition is the bare minimum. I am sorry but it’s too soon for an uplifting or optimistic post. We let you and ourselves down.”
Since Salah joined Liverpool in 2017, next season will be the first time they don’t play in the Champions League.
But when he signed a new three-year deal at Anfield last year, it seemed to end any talk about his future.
