Liverpool closed to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester United as Mohamed Salah’s decisive goal was enough to secure the Reds’ sixth consecutive win in the Premier League.
Before there was even a ball kicked at Anfield, the national anthem for the coronation was drowned out by boos and jeers from Liverpool fans.
As soon as the game started, Virgil van Dijk headed the ball towards Salah, and Salah scored his 30th goal of the season.
It was also Salah’s 100th goal at Anfield, and it was his ninth goal in a row at home, breaking another club record.
“It means a lot to me,” said the Egyptian. “I feel at home here, I’m happy. We need to finish the season the best possible way.”
United and Newcastle still have a good chance of getting into the Champions League because they have two games in hand on the other teams.
But Liverpool is putting them under pressure with their best run of play in an otherwise bad season.
