Tottenham Hotspur moved back into the Premier League top four after a thrilling 3-2 victory over Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening.
At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the visitors led at the half thanks to a disorganised Neal Maupay goal.
However, Tottenham dominated the Bees after the break, scoring three goals in eight minutes through Richarlison, Brennan Johnson, and Destiny Udogie.
Spurs held on to win and move back into the top four for the first time in 2024 after Ange Postecoglou’s team was knocked out of the Champions League spots after a 4-2 loss to Brighton on December 28. Ivan Toney pulled one back after a terrible backpass from Udogie.
Spurs and Brentford engaged in arguments during the first half of the intense match, which featured 28 shots between the two teams. However, Spurs took the lead early in the second half and never looked back.
Spurs had the better of the first part of the game, but were undone by Toney’s high defensive line. Gigi Vicario stopped his shot, but Maupay was there to seize the opportunity.
The ball deflected into the corner despite the Frenchman kicking it against his standing foot, giving Maupay his fourth goal in as many games.
However, Spurs scored three goals in eight minutes to start the second half on a high note. Udogie started by sprinting forward from left back and passing the ball to Timo Werner. His first attempt was blocked, so he finished at the second attempt.
After coming on as a halftime substitute, Johnson completed the goal rush with just his second touch after a low cross from the left by Werner, who was again the provider 73 seconds later. Maddison’s deflected shot set up Richarlison’s follow-up goal.
In his last seven league games, Richarlison has scored seven goals, which is one more than he had in his previous 47 top-flight appearances.
With a ridiculous backpass from Udogie to Toney, who coolly slipped the ball past Vicario for his second goal in as many games since returning from his eight-month ban for betting offences, Spurs gave Brentford a point again.
Unfortunately, Brentford was unable to equalise and finished 15th, four points above the relegation zone.
