Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has signed for Club Brugge on a season-long loan deal from Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.
The two clubs had reportedly agreed to a deal on Friday for the loan move of Tau. He will be loaned out for the upcoming 2019-20 campaign without the option to buy once his loan deal expires.
Tau is still struggling to obtain a work permit to play in England following his move from Mamelodi Sundowns last year, but the attacker was impressive in his debut season at Royale Union Saint-Gillois. He found the back of the net 11 times and assisted a further 13 from 34 appearances in all competitions.
The 25-year-old’s impressive performances in the Belgium second tier did not go unnoticed as he was named the Proximus League Player of the Year in his maiden season playing in Europe.
The former Mamelodi Sundowns attacker was signed by the Seagulls on a four-year deal but is yet to feature for the first team.
Technical director Dan Ashworth said: ‘This is a great move for Percy. It’s a step up to the next level in Belgium, and he also has the prospect of Champions League football.
‘It comes off the back of an impressive Africa Cup of Nations campaign with South Africa, and will give Percy the opportunity to further develop his undoubted talent.’
Club Brugge released the following statement on the acquisition of Tau: ‘Club brings Percy Tau to Brugwa. The South African is borrowed for one season from Premier League team Brighton & Hove Albion.
