Tottenham Hotspur welcomed minnows Gillingham to White Hart Lane in the EFL Cup on Wednesday and duly put them to the sword.

Spurs got off to a fast start as they looked to take the game to Gillingham. Christian Eriksen had an early chance saved before Cameron Carter-Vickers headed narrowly wide within the first five minutes.

The home side continued to apply the pressure as they tore through the Gillingham defence, with Erikison, Erik Lamela and Josh Onomah all coming close. The pressure finally told just before the half-hour mark as Erikison fired home from range to put Spurs a goal to the good.

Vincent Janssen had a succession of chances to get his name on the scoresheet before half-time as he had a shot blocked, miss another and had a third saved. The score remained 1-0 to Spurs at the interval.

Eriksen got Tottenham’s second-half off to the perfect start as he netted his second goal of the game after good work from Lamela just three minutes in. Just two minutes later it got even better for Spurs as they were awarded a penalty, which Janssen duly dispatched for a 3-0 lead.

Onomah grabbed Spurs’ fourth goal of the game in the 65th minute off an Erikson assist to continue the Danish star’s stunning performance, before Lamela finally got himself on the scoresheet as he netted following a ball from Janssen.

Spurs took their foot of the accelerator for the last 20-minutes  or so of the game as Tom Carroll had a couple of chances to add a sixth, while Gillingham finally managed some chances of their own as Adedeji Oshilaja and Mark Byrne tried their luck.

At the final whistle it was Spurs who claimed victory by a resounding 5-0 scoreline.
