Two own goals from Wout Faes helped Liverpool to a 2-1 comeback victory over Leicester City as the Reds move within two points of fourth place in the Premier League.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put Leicester ahead when he walked through the middle of the Liverpool defense in the fourth minute.
But that was all Faes needed to be doubly embarrassed.
In the 38th minute, Faes, who had just moved to the club from Reims for £15 million, tried to clear a cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold over his goalkeeper Danny Ward’s head.
Seven minutes later, his evening got worse.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain sent Darwin Nunez through, and his lob over Ward hit the post.
But when the ball came back, Faes managed to hit it right into his own goal.
“He has come back a little rusty having not played in a long time having got no minutes with Belgium at the World Cup,” said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers of the unfortunate Faes.
“When he came in, he was absolutely fantastic for us and was just unfortunate today.”
The result left Jurgen Klopp’s side in sixth place, two points off the top four while the Foxes have dropped down in 13th.
“At times, I thought we were poor today. It’s a cliche but it’s important to get the three points and win,” Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk told Sky Sports.
“We tried to get in the game but we weren’t good enough and we know that. We won, which is positive, but there are plenty of things we have to improve on.”
