England missed a chance to seal their place in the last 16 at Euro 2024 after playing out to a 1-1 draw against Denmark at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt am Main.

Following their 1-0 victory over Serbia in their opening match, victory for England in Frankfurt would have guaranteed them a spot in the following round as Group C victors.

But a lacklustre showing from Gareth Southgate’s team raises greater concerns about their chances of winning the European Championship for the first time.

“The challenge is to do something that has never been done before. So it couldn’t be any bigger,” said Southgate.

“Clearly we are disappointed with the level of the two performances.”

In a rematch of the Euro 2020 semifinal that England won, Harry Kane’s goal, which came after Kyle Walker caught Danish defender Victor Kristiansen off guard, gave Southgate’s team the perfect start.

However, Denmark was more than deserving of a point and managed to secure one just before halftime through a magnificent strike from Morten Hjulmand.

In the second half, Andreas Christensen of Denmark came dangerously close to scoring a late winner, while Phil Foden of England struck the post.

However, in the last games of Group C on Tuesday, everything is up for grabs with a share of the spoils.

Prior to it, in the 95th minute, Luka Jovic stole a point for Serbia to hold Slovenia 1-1.

With 21 minutes remaining, Slovenia took the lead thanks to Zan Karnicnik.

But with practically the last move of the match, AC Milan striker Jovic headed in a corner, keeping Serbia’s fate of making it to the round of sixteen in their own hands.

With four points, two more than Slovenia and Denmark, England leads the group and needs only a draw against Slovenia in Cologne to advance.
