Spain secured their spot in the last 16 of Euro 2024 following a 1-0 victory over defending champions Italy at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
Three of the last four European champions square off in one of the most eagerly awaited group stage matchups in Gelsenkirchen later today.
Spain started their campaign brilliantly, defeating World Cup semi-finalists Croatia 3-0 thanks to a blend of youthful inexperience and seasoned knowledge.
Italy had to rally to defeat Albania 2-1 after giving up the fastest goal in the competition’s history.
Both teams will advance to the knockout stages as group winners and will not have to play England in the quarterfinals if they win.
The two nations have faced off in each of the previous four European Championships, with Italy winning the last two after Spain triumphed their route to gold at Euro 2008 and 2012.
“The players will understand when they get to my age that they’ll want to have stories to tell,” said Italy coach Luciano Spalletti.
“This is one of those matches that gives them the chance to create that story.”
Spain’s triumph over Croatia was noteworthy for their more direct approach; for the first time in 136 competitive games spanning 16 years, La Roja prevailed handily while possessing less possession than their opponents.
“It’s almost like we’re looking in a mirror actually,” said Spain coach Luis de la Fuente of the sides’ similar styles.
“I think it will be a very high quality match.”
