Manchester United have been drawn against Celta De Vigo in the semi-finals of the Europa League, following the draw in Nyon on Friday afternoon.
The semi-final draw in Nyon, Switzerland, set up a mouth-watering clash between Manchester United and Celta De Vigo. This will be the first meeting between the two sides – though United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored against Celta in Europe as an Ajax player.
United have won two of their three European semi-finals against Spanish opposition, all in the European Cup. Most recently they beat Barcelona in 2007-08, also getting the better of Real Madrid in 1967-68, and went on to win the trophy in both of those seasons.
Meanwhile, Ajax Amsterdam will play host to Olympique Lyon in their last four encounter, which takes place at the Amsterdam Arena, with the two sides going head-to-head on four previous occasions, all of which came in the Champions League group stage.
The Dutch side won the home and away leg in the first group stage in 2002-03, before two draws in 2011-12, while Lyon are unbeaten in their last eight games against Eredivisie opponents since a 2-0 loss at home to Ajax in the 2002 Champions League group stage.
The first leg of the semi-final is scheduled to take place on 4 May, with the second leg fixture scheduled for 11 May.
