Casemiro bagged a brace as Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 3-1 victory over 10-man Reading to reach the FA Cup fifth round as Son Heung-min inspired Tottenham to victory over Preston.
On a day with no big surprises, struggling Premier League teams Leeds, Leicester, and Southampton all won, but Sunderland tied Fulham in the Championship.
United is now in fourth place in the Premier League and is close to making it to the League Cup final. This is more proof that the team is back on track under new manager Erik ten Hag.
In the 54th minute at Old Trafford, the home team took the lead when Anthony made a pass that split the defense and found Brazil teammate Casemiro. Casemiro then lifted the ball over goalkeeper Joe Lumley.
After four minutes, United had a two-goal lead when Casemiro hit a stunning shot from outside the box that found the bottom corner.
With the home team full of confidence, substitute Fred made the game safe with a daring flick from Bruno Fernandes’s low cross to the near post.
Reading was down to 10 players at that point because Andy Carroll had been sent off for a second yellow card, but Paul Ince’s team still scored a consolation goal.
Casemiro used to play for Real Madrid, and Manchester United captain Harry Maguire said he was a “phenomenal player.”
“You don’t win what he’s won without being a top player,” he said. “He’s improved the team, the morale and the performance.”
Harry Kane was left on the bench for Spurs’ game at Preston, so he didn’t get the chance to beat Jimmy Greaves and become Tottenham’s all-time top scorer.
Son stepped up in the place of the England captain and scored two great goals to give the team a much-needed confidence boost.
Last season, the South Korean shared the Premier League’s Golden Boot. Before that, he had only scored once in 17 games for club and country.
The first half of the fourth-round match wasn’t very exciting, but the 30-year-old brought it to life with a beautiful curling shot with his left foot. He won the match 21 minutes from the end by turning his defender and shooting high past Freddie Woodman.
Then, Arnaut Danjuma scored Tottenham’s third goal with a sloppy finish off a cross from Dejan Kulusevski. The goal made it 3-0.
