A dramatic late goal from Conor Gallagher saw Chelsea snatch a 3-2 victory over Leeds United to move into the FA Cup quarter-finals.
The exciting match between England and France in the fifth round at Stamford Bridge appeared to be going into overtime until the England player found himself free in the penalty area and finished past Illan Meslier.
Chelsea’s chances of taking home a trophy are preserved by the victory, after they were eliminated by Liverpool 1-0 in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.
If Mauricio Pochettino’s team defeats Championship leaders Leicester City at home in the last eight of March, they will play their FA Cup semifinal at Wembley.
The Argentine manager, who took over in July, thought that while the team was doing better, more time was still needed.
“The expectation is massive because we are Chelsea, but this team needs to build and build the confidence,” said Pochettino. “The unity is starting to grow, it’s not magic, you can’t just create it.
“It’s difficult because of the expectations. You need to find the right balance and need time so they can perform.
“In the past four weeks we are doing fantastically, the team are fighting and starting to behave like a team.”
After just nine minutes, Leeds took the lead thanks to a defensive blunder that let Mateo Joseph his first senior goal. Chelsea was down.
But for just six minutes, the visitors—who were ranked second in the second tier—were the leads.
After Moises Caicedo’s pass found Nicolas Jackson for a low shot that tied the score at one, Chelsea took the lead in the 37th minute when Mykhailo Mudryk swept Raheem Sterling’s pull-back into the bottom corner.
However, Leeds emerged as the stronger side in the second half and deservedly equalised when Joseph headed home his second goal after Jaidon Anthony’s well-placed cross found him at the back post.
Two opportunities were missed by Anthony to put the visitors ahead, and substitute Gallagher ended up being the game’s winner.
