Manchester United take on Chelsea in the FA Cup final this weekend with both teams looking to save their season by lifting some silverware, writes DEAN WORKMAN.
This season’s FA Cup final is riddled with numerous subplots that promise to serve up an entertaining encounter.
Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte are poised to reignite their feud at Wembley and with the chance of lifting silverware in the offing, both managers – who are obsessed about winning titles – will have the chance to get one over the other.
The dislike between the two coaches has been apparent ever since the war of words which played out in the media earlier this season, even though Mourinho has claimed that the two have sorted out their differences.
The match, however, is about more than the rivalry between the two managers. There are also Mourinho’s links to Stamford Bridge (where he enjoyed two successful spells), the rivalry that has developed between the two clubs over the years and the urgency of winning a trophy to save their season.
Manchester United may have improved significantly in the league, but still finished in second place, an astonishing 19 points behind champions Manchester City. A much-publicised failure in the Champions League, after two abject performances against Sevilla saw them knocked out in the round-of-16, only the FA Cup was left as a realistic chance of silverware.
After brushing off lower league opposition in Derby (2-0) and Yeovil Town (4-0) in the third and fourth rounds, the Red Devils beat Premier League teams Huddersfield United (2-0) and Brighton and Hove Albion (2-0) to secure a semi-final against Tottenham Hotspur.
The clash between the two English giants offered up loads of entertainment, but Mourinho’s men edged the encounter after coming back from a goal down to win 2-1 at Wembley to seal a place in the final.
Chelsea have failed to reach the heights of last season, with rumours of Conte’s departure swirling around throughout the campaign. A stuttering league campaign saw the Blues finish in fifth, missing out on a Champions League spot. As United, Chelsea were knocked out at the round-of-16 in the Champions League by Barcelona and only had the FA Cup left to play for.
The Blues beat Norwich City after a replay in the third round before beating Newcastle United (3-0) in the fourth round and Hull City (4-0) in the fifth round. Conte’s men then overcame Leicester City (2-1) in the quarter-finals and Southampton (2-0) in the semi-finals to secure a spot against their old foes in the final.
Both teams will be desperate for a victory on Saturday as lifting the FA Cup could go a long way in pleasing the fans.
It will likely be a tight encounter where both managers will look to use their tactical nous to gain the upper hand.
In a game of such magnitude between two quality sides, picking a winner is near on impossible. United, however, will have a slight advantage in terms of confidence after Chelsea suffered a faltering end to their Premier League campaign.
Manchester United and Chelsea will battle it out for the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 6:15pm.
