Tottenham Hotspur cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup following their 2-0 victory over League Two side Newport County at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.
With 10 changes to the starting line-up, Spurs got off to a slow start against the League Two side as they tried to play out from the back.
Although Spurs looked unsettled in the early exchanges of the match, they soon found their rhythm and opened the scoring in the 26th minute after Moussa Sissoko’s cross deflected in off Dan Butler.
As the game progressed, Spurs grew in confidence forcing Joe Day into making two saves in quick succession as they searched for their second goal of the night.
However, Erik Lamela made it 2-0 when he scored his first goal since September 2016 after sliding a shot in from Heung-Min Son’s pass.
The home side finished the first half with a two-goal lead over the visitors as they continued to dominate after the break, with Newport struggling to get out of their own half.
The Lilywhites had chances to extend their lead but Lamela was denied by the Newport shot-stopper while substitute Christian Eriksen steered his shot wide of the target after a slick passing move.
Fernando Llorente also twice missed the target from good positions inside the box while Dele Alli rattled the woodwork after he was played through on goal.
Meanwhile, Newport nearly grabbed a late goal but Padraig Amond saw his shot saved by Spurs goalkeeper Michel Vorm.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side will now take on League One side Rochdale in the next round of the FA Cup which is scheduled for Sunday, 18 February.
