Man United made nine changes but none to their renewed style as they smashed Wigan 4-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Only Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo survived from United’s 2-1 loss to Hull on Thursday as stand-in goalkeeper Sergio Romero was called into question on a number of occasions in the first half as Wigan started the brighter of the teams. Marouane Fellaini then changed the match as he headed home with minutes remaining in the half after Anthony Martial’s well-placed cross.

The second half saw United come into their own as they bossed their visitors across the pitch. Chris Smalling made it two when he headed powerfully into the back of the net as the Red Devils allayed any fears of becoming another high-profile exit in the world’s oldest club competition.

Jose Mourinho handed Axel Tuanzebe a debut after Timothy Fosu-Mensah pulled up lame. Martial, playing as if his life depended on it, then sparked a wonderful counter attacking goal as he laid on for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to tap home.

Bastian Schweinsteiger completed the rout as he capped off a rare United run, his first start in a year, with a superb acrobatic kick to make it four as the holders progressed into the next round.
