Arsenal forward Theo Walcott says he is feeling mixed emotions after scoring his 100th goal for the Gunners during their 2-0 victory over Sutton United on Monday evening.
The England international scored his 100th goal for the Gunners when his first-time finish found the back of the net from close range to all but seal his side’s progression into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.
During his 11-years with the club, it has taken him 370 appearances to become the 18th Arsenal player to reach 100 goals for the club.
Walcott admits that scoring a century of goals was not something he ever considered when he signed for the Gunners from Southampton back in 2006 but is thankful to everybody who contributed to his goals over the years.
‘No, not really. I always wanted to put my all in, hard work, but never really [expected to] be in that category of 100 goals for Arsenal,’ Walcott told the Arsenal website.
‘It’s great. I’m lost for words to be fair because I didn’t really think about it before and it’s just happened. It’ll probably hit me in a few days I’m sure, but I really enjoyed that.
‘I’m really proud of that personal achievement of mine. Especially playing out wide, to get that many goals… I don’t want it to stop now. It’s a really good achievement, I’m really happy.’
He added: ‘I couldn’t have done it without the guys as well, past and present, and I can’t thank them enough, all the players I’ve played with up to this point, and this group is brilliant. That’s a special moment for myself personally.’
Arsenal will now turn their attention back to the Premier League when they take on Southampton on Saturday.
The match at St Mary’s Stadium kicks off at 17:00.
