Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has revealed there was a “misunderstanding” between him and the referee after receiving a straight red card against Osasuna.
The England international was shown a straight red card after verbally abusing the referee on Saturday.
Los Blanco went on to draw the game against Osasuna 1-1 when Ante Budimir cancelled out Kylian Mbappé at the Estadio El Sadar in Pamplona.
Bellingham has since given his thoughts on what transpired between him and the referee.
“It’s clear that there was a communication error,” Bellingham said
“It’s an expression like the Spanish expression ‘joder’ and the consequence is that he left us with one less player.
“It’s not an insult, it was an expression for myself, you’ll see it in the video.
“Clearly I’ve said it as I turned towards the field of play and it’s difficult when he says it’s an insult when I haven’t insulted him.
“I’m glad that the video has come out and it’s quite clearly gone against what was in the report.
“I’m here to apologise to my teammates for putting them in a position where it’s more difficult to lose the game but essentially I do believe that it was a mistake and a misunderstanding.”
The England midfielder further explained that his emotions during games sometimes gets the better of him.
“I don’t think I should be sent off for speaking in another language,” Bellingham said.
“You have to understand that we players have a lot of emotions during matches. These small details can cost you a game.
“We take it very seriously. When you’re on the pitch, emotions can get the better of you, but that wasn’t the case today. I was very calm in the way I addressed him.
“You can see it in the video and by reading my lips. I read the minutes and I was right to use an expression I have been using since I was 16 or 17, for better or worse.”
