Real Madrid have announced the signing of Kylian Mbappe on a free transfer after the France captain parted ways with Paris Saint-Germain.

The declaration marks the end of Real Madrid’s protracted pursuit of one of the most productive forwards in international sport.

“Real Madrid have reached an agreement for the player to be at Real Madrid for the next five seasons,” the club said in a statement.

The 25-year-old, Mbappe called the move “a dream come true” on social media.

“So happy and proud to join the club of my dream @realmadrid. Nobody can understand how excited I am right now. Can’t wait to see you, Madridistas, and thanks for your unbelievable support,” Mbappe added.

Reports in Spain claim that he will make 35 million euros ($38 million) a season.

Verbally agreeing to move to Real Madrid in February, Mbappe later said in May that he would be leaving PSG at the end of the current campaign.

Before Mbappe plays in France’s pre-Euro 2024 friendly, Real moved to complete the deal on Monday. Real is coming off a 2-0 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Mbappe, who won the World Cup as a youngster in 2018, has scored a club record 256 goals for PSG after making his initial loan move from Monaco in 2017. The club is controlled by Qatar.

Eventually, at the age of 18, he signed a 180 million euro ($195 million) contract to join PSG.

PSG fell to Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final, despite Mbappe leading them to six Ligue 1 victories.

Even though he scored a hat-trick against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, he was ultimately defeated as Lionel Messi’s team prevailed on penalties.

PSG spent a lot of money to team up Mbappe, Neymar, and Messi in the hopes of solving the Champions League conundrum once and for all. The French club did not do well, though.

Mbappe’s significance to the French national team and the nation has increased along with his notoriety.

When a transfer to Real Madrid appeared all but certain in June 2022, President Emmanuel Macron stepped in to convince him to remain at PSG.

With Vinicius Jr., a forward from Brazil, and Jude Bellingham, a midfielder for England, Mbappe will create a potent attacking three at Real Madrid, who also reclaimed the La Liga title from bitter rivals Barcelona this season.
