Karim Benzema scored in the 93rd minute to help Real Madrid draw 3-3 against Sevilla and break Barcelona’s record of 39 games without defeat.
Barcelona went 39 games unbeaten from October 2015 to April 2016 before Los Blancos went one game better albeit in dramatic fashion against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey last 16 on Thursday.
Zinedine Zidane’s side advanced to the last eight of the competition 6-3 on aggregate but it was Benzema’s strike which stole the headlines as Madrid moved past Barca in the history books.
Madrid have won 31 and drawn nine times since their last defeat – a 2-0 loss to Wolfsburg in last season’s Champions League quarter-final first leg, scoring 115 goals and conceding 39.
Since taking over as first team boss in 2016, Zidane has won three titles (the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup) and has lost just two competitive outings.
Real suffered a setback as defender Danilo put the ball into the back of his own net. That goal was cancelled out by Marco Asensio as the 0-year-old midfielder scored a wonderful solo goal to even things up. Stevan Jovetic scored on his debut before Vicente Iborra put his side two ahead before Madrid launched their comeback.
Sergio Ramos ridiculously brilliant chipped penalty brought his side back into the contest before Benzema grabbed the headlines and a place in the club’s history with his smart finish at the death.
