Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid are on the verge of surpassing Pep Guardiola’s record of 16 successive La Liga wins with Barcelona. 

Los Blancos will go one better than their arch-rivals’ 2010-11 season feat should they record a win over the visiting Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

Zidane’s men have hit 51 goals in their run and conceded 12 times while their most comprehensive victory came when they thrashed Celta Vigo 7-1. In comparison, Barcelona’s streak saw them net 60 goals and concede just six before a 1-1 away draw to Sporting Gijon eventually saw their run come to an end.

Zidane has admitted he has been pleased by his side’s run of results but also insists the side are bound to encounter difficulties as the season wears on.

‘What we want is to keep winning points. We haven’t won anything and we know that this is a long season and that there will be many difficult moments,’ the Frenchman told the media, reports Goal.

Real Madrid currently top the La Liga standings and remain the only side with a 100% record. Real’s biggest rivals, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, play each other at the Camp Nou on Wednesday night, meaning a win for Los Blancos is likely to stretch their 3 point lead.
