Taariq Fielies against Sundowns

Cape Town City defender Taariq Fielies put in a man-of-the-match performance in the MTN8 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, but admits to being shocked by a number of things in the clash.

The Salt River-born man enjoyed a lively encounter against Sundowns in the first-leg semi-final victory over Pitso Mosimane’s side picking up a yellow card in the first two minutes of the game, before fluffing an easy opportunity to give his side the lead moments before the half-time break.

The Citizens defender did, however, made amends for his miss as he latched onto Ayanda Patosi’s corner to smash home the only goal of the game to give his side the advantage going into second-leg in Pretoria.

Although Fielies walked away with the man-of-the-match gong, the lanky defender told TFG SoccerClub that his teammates deserve all the credit for the victory.

‘Thanks, firstly all credit must go to the whole squad,’ he told TFG SoccerClub.

‘It was a very lively game indeed. I was a bit shocked when I got that early yellow card in the game and I knew I have to be careful throughout the encounter.

‘This was a very good game especially for the fans that came out in their numbers to see a great contest and a good brand of football from both sides. That’s exactly what they got.

‘I was a bit disappointed in missing that chance that could’ve given us that lead. I timed my jump well but mistimed the ball, however, I carried on and just tried to get another opportunity,’ he concluded.

Fielies will be hoping for more of the same from the Citizens when Benni McCarthy’s side resume their rivalry with Sundowns in the second-leg of their semi-final clash at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium with kick-off set for 3pm.
