Cape Town City star defender Taariq Fielies says that winning the MTN8 title would serve as a great boost for their aspirations of winning the Absa Premiership title under coach Benni McCarthy.

The Citizens do duty against SuperSport United in a repeat of the 2017 edition of the MTN8 final, which the Tshwane outfit clinched courtesy of Ronwen Williams’ heroics in the penalty shoot-out, after the game ended 1-1 after extra-time.

McCarthy’s side have the opportunity to avenge last year’s cup final loss, but more importantly they have the opportunity to add the MTN8 title to their trophy cabinet which consists of the Telkom Knockout trophy which they won in their debut season in the Absa Premiership in 2016.

The Mother City outfit endured a tough journey en route to the final, securing victories against Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United respectively.

Speaking to TFG SoccerClub in an exclusive interview, former Bafana Bafana international and City stalwart Fielies revealed the teams’ desire to get their hands on the first official trophy on offer in the 2018-19 season.

‘Obviously everyone wants their first taste of silverware and we got an opportunity. Winning the final would be great for the club and for Benni, but we will continue to work hard,’ he told TFG SoccerClub.

When asked if being winning MTN8 final would serve as the ideal kickstart for their league aspirations, the … year-old said that the Citizens have been taking each game as it comes and that it will continue in that vein for cup or league competitions.

‘We taking it game by game and we treat every game the same. They are all important. We don’t take any games lightly.

Each and every game we give our utmost best to get a good result so if we should win the MTN8 final it would be a great boost for the entire season. The season is still young so we will push ourselves to our limits,’ he concluded.

Fielies will be unavailable for his side’s clash against SuperSport at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday after picking up a red card in his side’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of Kaizer Chiefs at the Cape Town Stadium.
