Kaitano Tembo’s men had a difficult route to the final as they had to face off both of the Soweto giants. The Pretoria-based club first beat Orlando Pirates on penalties in the quarter-final before beating Kaizer Chiefs 3-2 over the two-legged semi-final.
Benni McCarthy’s team, however, also had a testing path to the final. The Citizens beat Maritzburg United 1-0 away from home in a scrappy hard-fought encounter before facing off against the Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns.
City beat the Brazilians 1-0 in Cape Town before losing the second leg 1-0 in Pretoria, sending the tie to penalties. Peter Leeuwenburgh was then the hero as he saved two penalties to send his team to the final.

In last year’s final, which was also held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, SuperSport came out victorious 4-2 on penalties after the game finished 1-1 in normal time.
City will be looking for a different outcome to last year’s showpiece event, while SuperSport are looking to be the first team to defend the MTN8 since Orlando Pirates in 2009.
