Itumeleng Khune saved two penalties to guide Kaizer Chiefs to victory via a penalty shoot-out win over Stellenbosch FC in the MTN8 quarters, while Mamelodi Sundowns’ new recruits, Marcelo Allende and Nassir Abubeker, fired the Brazilains to a 2-0 win over SuperSport United.

Khune was brought back into the Chiefs starting eleven for the first time this season and ended up having a massive impact.

After a slow first half things sprung into life in the second as Stellies grabbed the opener at the start of the second stanza as Njabulo Ngcobo was dispossessed by Jayden Adams, who drove forward at goal before putting it on a plate for Nduli to score into an open net.

Another error at the back proved costly but this time for the home side as Du Preez intercepted a back pass by Oswin Andries and poked the ball past the on-rushing Langeveldt.

Chiefs looked the more likely of the two sides in the closing stage but as neither side could find the back of the net the game headed to penalties.

Amakhosi managed to win the penalty shoot-out 4-3 after Khune made two saves, keeping out the last kick from Likuta following a successful spot-kick by Phathutshedzo Nange.

In the later game Sundowns’ new forwards, came off the bench to great effect to secure a victory in the Tshwane derby and send Downs into the semi-finals.

Gavin Hunt’s men did well to restrict Sundowns over the opening 60 minutes but eventually Downs turned to the bench and the quality they brought on proved to be the big difference.

Allende broke the deadlock with 10 minutes to play, while Nassir put the icing on the cake as he wrapped up the game with a second for Downs in the closing stages.
