Kaizer Chiefs will take on Stellenbosch FC in their Nedbank Cup last 16 encounter at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

The club’s fans may have celebrated many triumphs over the years but after a two-and-a-half-year trophy drought, Steve Komphela is desperate to win the Nedbank Cup for the supporters of the Glamour Boys.

The fans have become increasingly frustrated during the drought, with many calling for the manager to be sacked. Despite this criticism though, Komphela has remained upbeat about his chances of ending the barren spell.

When asked during his pre-match press conference if winning the cup would have a significant impact on his future at the club, the coach said, ‘It would be very nice for Kaizer Chiefs to win the Nedbank [Cup] for the supporters, not for Steve.’

‘Honestly speaking, I am saying this from the bottom of my heart. If it meant that I should die for Chiefs to win this trophy then so be it, it’s not about me, it’s about these people [Chiefs fans], they love this club and they deserve something.’

Responding to what his message to the fans would be, the former Maritzburg United manager said: ‘The only message you can give is on the field. You must perform and win the match so that they will be happy again. Whatever you say now doesn’t matter. You just have to win matches.’

Komphela will be hoping that his team can do just that on the weekend and despite playing against lower league opposition he is not expecting an easy game.

‘They don’t come any easier. We sent our people to go and observe what they do and they are quite a strong team. We have to go to Durban and do justice. Like any other of the [last] sixteen teams, only one can win it. We also have a great chance but we have to go to Durban and apply ourselves.’
