Nduduzo Sibaya celebrates his goal against Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup Last 16

Golden Arrows secured a 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium to advance to the next round of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday.

The Brazilians got off to a good start and showed their attacking intent early on with the likes of Thapelo Morena and Billiat producing efforts at goals in the opening 15 minutes.

Arrows came close to opening the scoring in the 26th minute, but Sibusiso Sibeko somehow placed his effort wide of the target from six yards out.

Pitso Mosimane’s side controlled the game and saw more possession of the ball, but struggled to break down the Arrows defence in the final third.

Arrows proved to be more of a threat on the counter-attack, with the likes of Kudakwashe Mahachi and Nduduzo Sibiya causing Sundowns a few problems down the flanks.

However, after the opening 45 minutes of the match, Sundowns and Arrows went into the half-time interval with the scoreline locked at 0-0.

The home side saw a lot of possession on the ball in the second half, but they were forced to take their chances from distance.

Sundowns were then dealt a major blow in the 59th minute, when Mzikiyise Mashaba was forced off the field through an injury, to be replaced by Themba Zwane.

However, Arrows eventually broke the deadlock in the 66th minute, when Sibiya did well to beat marker before firing a low shot into the far corner to make it 1-0.

Sundowns pressed forward in search of an equalising goal in the closing stages, but were unable to break down the Arrows defence.

Arrows held on to their 1-0 lead until the final whistle as they secured their spot in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals and sent Sundowns crashing out of the competition.

Meanwhile, Chippa United booked their place in the next round of the competition after they beat Polokwane City 2-0 at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium through goals by Buyani Sali and Andile Mbenyane.
