SuperSport United coach Stuart Baxter felt it would have been a disservice had his team lost to Kaizer Chiefs on penalties in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals on Saturday night.
The Tshwane outfit ended Chiefs’ 14-game unbeaten streak in all competitions and advanced to the semi-finals of the competition. They emerged 5-3 victors in the penalty shoot-out after the game ended 1-1, with Ramahlwe Mphahlele’s 82nd minute header cancelling Jeremy Brockie’s strike.
Baxter revealed that he felt his side should’ve sealed the game in regulation time, in addition to heaping praise on his players for their performance.
‘We felt we should’ve won it in the 90 (minutes). It goes into extra time and then we go to penalties, and they kept their nerve,’ he said after the game.
‘Penalties are penalties. If we had lost on it, I would have been gutted, so I’ll accept the win through penalties.
‘I think it reflected the game, we were on top and created better chances and I think we were very solid.
‘I’m proud of the players, I think their performances tonight, on the back of questionable performances, a lot of them upped their game,’ he concluded.
Matsatsantsa turn their attention to the Absa Premiership where they face fellow title-contenders Bidvest Wits on Tuesday 25 April.
The match at the Bidvest Stadium is set to kickoff at 19:30.
