In what was tight affair, the sides could not be separated after 120 minutes.

Gallants took the lead in the 19th minute when they were awarded a penalty and, while Ofori guessed correctly, Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo placed the ball just out of his reach to fire his side in front.

Pirates got the leveller on the half-hour mark after Bandile Shandu snuck behind the defence to fire his effort past Gallants keeper King Ndlovu.

But no further goals came as the sides had to settle for a lottery of penalties, after which the defending champions progressed.

Post-game, Orlando Pirates co-coach Faldu Davids admitted that his charges only had themselves to blame.

“I think we had ourselves to blame, besides the penalty they had, one turnover in the last minute where they had a chance to score, they never really troubled our goalkeeper,” Davids told SuperSport TV.

“On the other hand, we had enough chances to win the game in normal time and extra time as well.

“That’s credit to the boys, they applied the strategy to press high and not allow them to play these short passes in midfield, putting their bodies on the line, jumping into the next line.
