Orlando Pirates coach Kjell Jonevret says his side deserves to reach the finals following their dominant display during their 1-0 victory over Golden Arrows in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals on Sunday.

The Buccaneers secured their place in the finals of the competition after Abbubaker Mobara’s 34th-minute header proved to be the difference, as they are now set to face defending champions SuperSport United in the finals on 24 June.

The Swedish coach has heaped praised on his players display after their dominant performance against Abafana Bes’thende.

‘I think we were the better team. Of course, we were a little nervous there at the end but the first-half [we had] very good control, probably should have scored one or two more goals,’ Jonevret told SuperSport.

‘And I think the players were great.’

The 54-year-old says he is delighted that the Sea Robbers have made it through to the finals while reserving special praise for Thamsanqa Gabuza contributions.

‘Gabuza, fantastic I think to keep us up there. There have been a lot of people that have talked about [Gabuza’s] career is over but my God, I think he was fantastic today. All the players were,’ he added.

‘I’m happy, of course. Look at the people, the atmosphere here [at the stadium], we have something to dream about.’

With their final berth now providing some light in an otherwise dismal campaign, Jonevret said:

Jonevret says he is hopeful that making it to the final two will help his side rediscover their for as they head into their last Absa Premiership game of the season against Arrows.

‘It has been a troubled season but, of course, there are many people who are disappointed and hope for more. There are big problems [at Pirates] but this maybe can help a little bit. There are a few happy people here today,’ Jonevret concluded.

Orlando Pirates will now turn their attention back to the Absa Premiership when they take on Golden Arrows on Saturday.

The match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium kicks off at 15:00.
