Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela says Amakhosi has to put their Nedbank Cup exit behind them and will now shift their focus to winning the Absa Premiership title this season.
Matsatsantsa booked their place in the 2017 Nedbank Cup semi-finals after defeating Amakhosi 5-3 on penalties at the FNB Stadium, when the quarter-final clash ended in a 1-1 stalemate after regulation time and extra time.
The 49-year-old coach admits that failure to capitalise on their chances created in the final third played a vital role in their elimination from the competition, despite changing his tactics during the match.
‘We tried a few tactics to win the game. I thought we could have done better. When William Twala came on (replacing George Lebese in the 79th minute), he asked them a few questions, but we couldn’t capitalise,’ Komphela told the Kaizer Chiefs website.
‘At that stage, Michael Boxall was under pressure sitting on a yellow, we should have put more emphasis on his side.
‘After all, we lost on penalties and we are out of the competition that we hoped to win. There’s nothing much to say. A loss is a loss, but we could have won it if we took our chances. Nobody will remember that we lost it on penalties.’
Amakhosi only have the Absa Premiership left to focus on this season, and Komphela insists his side will turn their attention back to the league as they bid to claim their fifth PSL title.
‘Nobody will remember that you missed a penalty during extra time (Bernard Parker’s 13th-minute penalty of extra time). We also missed a penalty (George Maluleka) during the shoot-out and got knocked out of the cup,’ he added.
‘We will go back to take stock. We will get the bodies fresh and get the focus back on track.
Kaizer Chiefs will now travel to the Cape Town Stadium when they take on Cape Town City in the Absa Premiership on Tuesday in a top of the table clash.
Kick-off has been scheduled for 19:30.
