Kaizer Chiefs coach Steven Komphela says he was delighted with his side’s performance after claiming a 3-0 victory over Stellenbosch in the Nedbank Cup on Saturday.

The Glamour Boys booked their place in the round of 16 after securing a comfortable victory over the National First Divison side through goals by Joseph Molangoane, Siphiwe Tshabalala and Gustavo Paez.

The 49-year-old coach has heaped praise on his side’s winning mentality, while also reserving special praise for the likes of Lucky Baloyi and Brilliant Khuzwayo following their performances.

‘What Lucky [Baloyi] did – congratulations to him – is what ‘Mido’ [George Maluleka] had been doing before. Brilliant [Khuzwayo] as well, all the changes,’ Komphela told the Kaizer Chiefs website.

‘What we’re trying to achieve is that any player at Chiefs, at any given time, if called upon, we must do our job and that’s that. We’re delighted with the victory.’

Komphela continued to say that he felt his side could’ve shown more professionalism on the field after losing the ball ‘cheaply’ in the middle of the park.

‘3-0 – I thought we played well. We got the result, but there were also areas where I thought we should be more professional,’ he said.

‘You don’t want to lose the ball cheaply, you want to respect the game and play in a positive manner. At some stage, I found some areas where we let loose.

‘One thing you must know: football is culture and tradition – it defines you as a society and this [show of skill and flair] is what South Africans enjoy in football.’

Kaizer Chiefs will now turn their attention back to the Absa Premiership when they take on Baroka on Saturday.

The match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium kicks off at 20:15.
