Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen believes Nduduzo Sibiya’s goal was the turning point, following his sides’ 1-0 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup.
Abafana Bes’thende progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition through a 67th-minute goal by Nduduzo Sibiya at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.
The 46-year-old says it was not the ‘prettiest’ match to watch, but he claims that his side did well to keep the Brazilians at bay until the final whistle.
‘There’s an old saying that goes “there is no room for comments in the results column “, and that applies to our match,’ Larsen told the Golden Arrows website.
‘Not the prettiest match to watch, but our intention to frustrate our opponents worked for us. We had three glorious chances in the first half all against the run of play, but our finishing left a lot to be desired.
‘The defining moment came when Sibiya broke through the middle before slotting past Mweene. We defended well after scoring, limiting our opponents to very few clear-cut chances.’
Abafana Bes’thende are currently placed sixth in the Absa Premiership standings with 30 points, having won eight out of 22 matches played so far this season, trailing Sundowns in fifth place by five points.
Golden Arrows will now turn their attention to the Absa Premiership when they take on Bidvest Wits on Tuesday.
The match at the Bidvest Stadium kicks off at 19:30.
