Manqoba Mngqithi acknowledged the efforts of third-tier outfit EC Bees, but lamented the defensive display of Mamelodi Sundowns in their 2-1 win in the Nedbank Cup.
Despite the victory, assistant coach Mngqithi voiced his concern with his side’s defensive frailties and failure to convert their chances.
‘The first half should have been a different story, we made a stupid mistake and got punished immediately for it,’ he said in post-match comments.
‘From there, we created a lot of good chances and we could have taken the lead, even from the first half. No wonder the goalkeeper was the Man of the Match, he kept them in the game.
‘It is always scary when a small team is leading at that time of the game, but we had to be careful because if you go out, they will catch you on the counterattack.
‘We knew that with time, that they were going to tire and that is why, at the end, they were short.
‘They could not deal with the way our team was kicking the ball. Honestly, speaking like I said before, they are a very good team.
‘I must thank the supporters for always supporting us.
‘You would not think that when we are playing a small team that they will come in their numbers, so they need to be appreciated for what they are doing,’ he concluded.
