TS Galaxy repeated their heroics of the 2019 Nedbank Cup final against Kaizer Chiefs by again knocking Amakhosi out at the round-of-32 stage on Saturday evening, winning 1-0 at the FNB Stadium.

Chiefs looked to get off to a fast start and nearly had the early goal they were searching for, but Daniel Cardoso couldn’t hit the target with his glancing header following a corner by Keagan Dolly with just two minutes gone.

Galaxy then began to find their feet and had a golden chance of their own with 20 minutes gone, as Lindokuhle Mbatha’s curling strike looked destined for the back of the net but Brandon Petersen pulled off an acrobatic save to keep the scores level.

Both sides were finding chances hard to come by in the remainder in the half, with Khama Billiat’s foray into the Galaxy box the only half opening of any kind.

Stuart Baxter would have wanted his side to come out with intent in the second half, but they spurned another great chance eight minutes into the second half. Dolly slipped Ngcobo through on the counter, but the midfielder fired his effort straight at goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi.

Chiefs were made to rue that missed chance almost immediately as Phathutshedzo Nange’s awful back pass was snapped up by Augustine Kwen, who provided a powerful finish to beat Peterson at his near post.

Dolly should have levelled matters in the 67th minute as Chiefs broke down the right flank with Njabulo Blom. He whipped in a low cross to pick out the Bafana Bafana star, who came sliding in but couldn’t keep his shot down.

Chiefs then thought they levelled matters in the dying minutes as Leonardo Castro bundled the ball over the line, but the goal was ruled out offside in the buildup.

The Rockets managed to see out the remaider of the game to knock Chiefs out of the Nedbank Cup at the round of 32 for a second season running.
