Mamelodi Sundowns new boy Mauricio Affonso says he is well on his way to becoming fully match fit ahead of the new 2019-20 season.
The 27-year-old joined Sundowns from Peruvian First Division side Club Alianza Lima after putting pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Brazilians.
The South American was given the chance to stretch his legs after making his unofficial debut during Sundowns’ 1-1 draw with TS Sporting during their pre-season friendly in Nelspruit on Saturday.
‘I am excited and I think I am adjusting well so far. The coach gave me 45 minutes and I almost got a goal as well,’ Affonso told his club’s official website.
‘What is important for me now is working on my fitness, but I feel I am well on my way there because I never stopped training during the off-season. I believe my teammates will push me as well because the level of skill here is very good and being with them in Nelspruit was a good way to get to know everyone and see for myself the professionalism of all the players here.’
The forward managed to bag four goals and two assists in his final eight games for Club Alianza Lima before making the switch to Sundowns.
‘I feel a little bit more settled now. I have found where I am going to stay and I can’t wait for the season to start so I can contribute to the team’s success. I have also spoken to the coach about what he expects of me this season,’ he added.
Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Tshwane rivals SuperSport United in their opening Absa Premiership fixture at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on 3 August, with kick-off set for 3pm.
