Ajax Cape Town moved out of the relegation zone after claiming a 2-0 victory over a struggling SuperSport United side at Athlone Stadium on Wednesday evening, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

SuperSport looked the more lively side in the opening exchanges with Morgan Gould nearly breaking the deadlock after 10 minutes when he directed his header towards the target, but the veteran defender was unable to find the back of the net.

The Urban Warriors grew in confidence as the game went on and came close to scoring in the 33rd minute, but Yannick Zakri’s header sailed inches wide of the target.

Grant Kekana was unlucky not to have found the back of the net as the Ajax defence did well to clear his goal-bound strike off the line during added time.

The home side eventually broke the deadlock five minutes into the second half when Fagrie Lakay showed great composure to slot the ball home from the edge of the area.

Thabo Mnyamane had a chance to level matters on the hour-mark, but the midfielder failed to beat Brandon Petersen with his free kick from just outside the box.

The Urban Warriors then doubled their lead in the 77th minute when Mario Booysen reacted the fastest to slot the ball home from close range following an error by Ronwen Williams.

Sipho Mbule nearly scored a consolation goal in stoppage time for Matsatsantsa, but his effort was deflected from distance on to the post and away from danger.

However, Ajax held on to their two-goal lead over Matsatsantsa until the final whistle as the home side walked away with all three points to lift them out of the relegation zone.
