Bidvest Wits suffered their first loss of the season after Baroka beat them 1-0 at the Bidvest Stadium on Tuesday.

The Clever Boys came into the game off the back of their impressive 3-0 victory away over AmaZulu in their opening game on Saturday.

Baroka, on the other hand, produced a notable performance of their own as they came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Cape Town City.

Wits coach Gavin Hunt named an unchanged team after his side’s convincing opening-day win, but they struggled to get off to a fast start. The home side looked to whip in some dangerous crosses, but were met by some quality defending.

Baroka had their first opening when Tshidiso Patjie let fly with curling effort from the edge of the box but it flew just over the bar.

The game looked to be heading into the break scoreless until drama struck five minutes before half time, when the referee awarded a free kick just outside the box for a handball despite replays showing the incident took place inside the penalty area.

It didn’t matter, though, as Gerald Phiri Junior stepped up and sent his effort flying into the top corner leaving Wits goalkeeper Brandon Petersen with little chance.

Hunt would have been hoping that his charge would come out firing in the second half, but it was the visitors who created the first opening as Mduduzi Mdantsane’s low shot was well saved by Petersen.

The Clever Boys were knocking on the door and came close when Doutie was slipped in on goal, but his effort was well saved by the outstretched hand of Elvis Chipezeze at his near post.

Chipezeze was proving to be in fine form and produced a number of top-quality saves to keep his side’s lead intact.

Wits struggled to produce the final ball on the evening as Baroka managed to hold on for their first every victory against the Clever Boys.
