Baroka ended SuperSport United’s 19-game unbeaten run after their 1-0 victory, while Golden Arrows snatched a late 2-1 victory over Highlands Park in the Absa Premiership on Saturday.
SuperSport came out with intent in the early stages, with Kingston Nkhatha causing Baroka a plenty of problems in the opening 20 minutes of the match.
Baroka started to show more of an attacking intent as the half went on, but struggled to carve out any clear-cut opportunities in the final third.
The visiting side came close to scoring in the 23rd minute when Mxolisi Kunene forced United goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse into making an awkward save with a low effort from 20-yards out.
Stuart Baxter’s side again came close to breaking the deadlock in the 31st minute, but Jeremy Brockie’s thunderous volley was turned away by Oscarine Masuluke.
Masuluke came to Baroka’s rescue five minutes into the second half when he rushed off his line to deny Nkhatha in a one-on-one situation.
However, Baroka eventually opened the scoring in the 56th minute when Maboke Matlakala broke through on goal, before calmly slotting the ball into the far corner from close range to make it 1-0.
Baroka nearly doubled their lead in the 85th minute when an unmarked Matlakala powered his headed effort inches wide of the upright.
SuperSport pressed forward in search of an equaliser in the closing stages of the match, but were unable to break down the Baroka defence as their 19-match unbeaten run came to an end.
Meanwhile, Golden Arrows secured a 2-1 victory over Highlands Park at the Princess Magogo Stadium when goals by Knox Mutizwa and Kudakwashe Mahachi cancelled out Surprise Moriri’s 80th-minute goal.
