Former Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has revealed why he turned down the chance to take over as head coach of Orlando Pirates last year.
The 42-year-old was sacked by the Citizens in November 2019 and linked with a potential return to the Buccaneers as their new head coach.
However, German tactician Josef Zinnbauer was announced as the club’s new head coach in December last year – replacing Rhulani Mokwena following their poor run of form in the Absa Premiership.
McCarthy has since revealed what transpired and ended the speculation of him becoming Pirates coach.
‘Yes, I was linked with Pirates [before they hired Josef Zinnbauer] but I never had a conversation with the chairman [Irvin Khoza],’ McCarthy told the South African Football Journalists Association (Safja).
‘Pirates made their decision and at this point in time that seems like it was a right decision. He [Zinnbauer] has done relatively well with Pirates.’
McCarthy went on to praise the contributions of Zinnbauer, who he believes is doing a great job and getting the best out of his players.
‘The team is playing much better and it seems like he is getting the best out of a lot of players,’ he added.
‘I’m happy for Pirates – that they seem to have gotten back on track. So, I did not have a conversation with the chairman about taking the job or not taking the job.’
