Benni McCarthy lays into Bongani Zungu

Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy admits that Bloemfontein Celtic initially made a mockery of them, but had to learn how hard it is to play at the Cape Town Stadium, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

The Citizens came from from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory over Celtic in their final Absa Premiership game of the year.

The Mother City-based outfit have since moved up to eighth place with 20 points after 14 matches played so far this season.

McCarthy claims that his side played their best football this season in the second 45 minutes of the game, which saw them score three goals to claim maximum points on home soil.

‘There’s a game of football to be won, and the opposition team with all the problems, they’ve come here to Cape Town and push us and made a mockery of us, so they had to hear it the hard way,’ Benni said.

‘I asked for a response because I’m not going to tell them what they want to hear, I’m going to tell them straight. Rubbish is rubbish, we were that for 45 minutes, and that’s the end of that.

‘The best 45 minutes of football from us this season.

‘That was Cape Town City football. Why we had to wait so long to see it… but a win is a win, and we’ll take it.’
