Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy believes there is still room for improvement, despite claiming a comfortable 2-0 victory over SuperSport United at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday, writes DYLAN APPOLIS.

Goals from Roland Putsche and Craig Martin proved to be the difference as the Citizens collected their first three points in the 2018-19 Absa Premiership campaign.

Speaking to TFGSoccerClub McCarthy gave his thoughts on the game: ‘It’s started off a little bit slow, more than I expected us to start from the get-go, but we tried to make our intentions clear.

‘The first pass from Thami [Thamsanqa Mkhize] was very sloppy and the second pass allowed them to get into the game. I think we started growing into our own.

‘We knew they would come out and press us higher because they know that we’ll play out from the back.

He added: ‘I just told the guys we’ve done it the whole pre-season that’s why we hardly ran. We just played football because we wanted to be comfortable.

‘I think today [Saturday] it shows, as much as they came, the pressing was good, high intensity but we kept our composure and played through it.

McCarthy added that his side still has room for growth it’s ‘just the first game of the season’.

‘A lot of good came from the match, but we can still improve. Like we said, it’s a long season and it’s only the first one but the most important one.

‘After the group of games we played, we have this cycle where we plan for the first five games and obviously for me, this was the key one that we got passed.

‘We very happy we managed to get past them this time around.’
